The government has acknowledged that Pakistan’s maritime sector suffered losses amounting to billions last year. Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh highlighted its crucial role in the country’s economic development. A profit target of Rs. 100 billion has been set, with export projections reaching $60 billion over the next four years.
Despite significant potential, Pakistan’s ports are currently operating at only 50% capacity. To address this, the government is working on expanding port infrastructure to accommodate larger cargo shipments. Strengthening trade relations with Central Asian nations is also a key focus.
The fisheries sector is drawing international investment, with planned upgrades for Korangi Fish Harbor. Additionally, the government aims to direct 60% of official trade through Gwadar Port, with ongoing efforts to develop it into a state-of-the-art deep-sea port.
