The family of a 16-year-old boy is mourning his tragic death after he became the victim of an AI-driven sextortion scam. The teenager, Elijah Heacock, received a message threatening to share an AI-generated nude image unless he paid $3,000. Overwhelmed by the threat, he died by suicide soon after.
Elijah’s parents, John Burnett and Shannon Heacock, say they were unaware of sextortion scams before their son’s death. “We had no idea what was happening,” Burnett said, describing the perpetrators as “organized and relentless.” The use of generative AI has made it easier for scammers to create fake explicit images, increasing the risk for young people.
Sextortion cases have surged, with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children receiving over 500,000 reports. The FBI estimates that at least 20 young people have died by suicide from such scams since 2021.
