Microsoft has announced a $3 billion investment in India over the next two years, reaffirming its long-term commitment to the country’s fast-growing digital and artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. The move comes shortly after the Windows maker halted operations in Pakistan, abandoning the country.
Microsoft’s closure in Pakistan is attributed to economic instability and regulatory challenges in the country, an obstacle that Microsoft does not seem to be facing in India. At the time of writing, the software maker only has a liaison office with minimal staffing in Pakistan.
India Expansion
Microsoft’s investment in India will be directed toward the expansion of its hyperscale cloud infrastructure, which includes setting up new data centers and strengthening AI capabilities to support businesses, developers, and government institutions. This expansion is expected to accelerate India’s digital transformation.
CEO Satya Nadella called India a “global leader in AI innovation,” noting that the new investment aims to “unlock opportunities across every sector of the economy.” Microsoft has already partnered with various Indian ministries, startups, and educational institutions to develop AI-powered tools and upskill millions of workers in digital technologies.
