PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday sentenced a lawyer to six months in prison for posting inappropriate and derogatory comments about a female judge on social media.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the accused, Asadullah Advocate.
According to the short order, the lawyer was found guilty of contempt of court under Section 3 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2004.
The case involved offensive language used by the lawyer against a female civil judge serving in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A formal complaint had been filed against him for making insulting remarks online.
In its verdict, the PHC ruled that Asadullah Advocate had committed contempt of court. The court issued a brief order in the case, noting that a detailed judgment would be released at a later date.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued notices to the federal government, requesting a detailed report on measures to regulate social media use among children under 16.
Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir issued a two-page order on a petition filed by minor Akbar Khan Shinwari, through his father, seeking enforcement of fundamental rights. The petitioner urged the court to direct the government to restrict and regulate social media access for children under 16.
The court emphasized that protecting children from online harm is of utmost importance, highlighting risks such as cyberbullying, mental health challenges, privacy violations, and exposure to harmful content due to unregulated social media access.
